As has been the case in each of the big tournaments – the Amherst Invitational, Pioneer Valley Invitational and now the Division 1 state championship – this season, the Amherst Regional girls varsity ultimate team met Four Rivers in the finals on Sunday. And just as the previous two times played out, the Hurricanes prevailed to earn first place and bring home a trophy.
With a huge crowd on hand, Amherst delivered one of its most complete performances of the season in the title game against the Otters. The game started close, but the ‘Canes pulled away with a break in the fourth point and never looked back. Amherst scored the next three points and took a 7-3 lead into halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, as Amherst’s sharp offense didn’t give Four Rivers the opportunity to convert on a single break all day.
The final was a total team effort, with all 15 active players seeing playing time. The ‘Canes were led by their captain and center-handler Isla Cusick, who racked up a whopping nine assists – connecting with seven different receivers for scores. Senior Addie Mager and Felix Goeckel led the scoring with three goals apiece and junior Myla Peltier with added two.
The last point was scored on a quick pass from Mager to freshman Annie Haugsjaahabink – passing the disc, and high hopes, to the next generation of Amherst ultimate stars.
Sunday’s victory marked the Hurricanes’ third tournament win in the past four weeks, as they’ve been dominant en route to a trio of prominent triumphs this month.
This past weekend, Amherst went 6-0 and won all six of its games – against Cambridge, Lincoln-Sudbury, Lexington, Somerville, Newton-North and Four Rivers – by a combined total of 71-18. Amherst is now 27-3-1 on the year and now shift its focus to the High School National Invitational, set for June 13 and 14 in Lehigh Valley, Pa.
Amherst is looking for help supporting its trip to play against the top talent from across the country. If you would like to support, visit their GoFundMe page at this link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/donate-to-send-amherst-gx-varsity-to-nationals.
