EASTHAMPTON — The city is officially initiating its search for a new police chief, following the resignation of Chief Robert Alberti. The firm Public Safety Consultants has been selected by the city to assist in the formation of a search committee and subsequent search proceeding.
Alberti, 51, tendered his resignation via a letter sent to city officials on July 15, bringing an end to his 24-year tenure on the police force. In the letter, Alberti cited “health concerns” as his reason for stepping down, putting forth a Nov. 26 retirement date and an immediate request for medical leave which concluded at the start of his retirement.
At the time, Easthampton Mayor Nicole LaChapelle called the resignation “surprising,” but expressed thanks to Alberti for leaving the department in a “better” and “more modern” place.
Currently, Deputy Police Chief Dennis Scribner is serving as the interim chief for the 37-member department.
A statement released by the city on Wednesday notes that the ideal candidate is a person who has proven leadership skills and commitments not only to effective policing, but to community trust as well.
“The new Chief will not only oversee the Easthampton Police Department but also work to build strong, positive relationships between the department and the community it serves,” the statement reads.
The city’s new chief of police will be responsible for leading and carrying out administrative duties within the police department. The chief also is expected to work with city officials, local agencies and Easthampton residents to identify and work toward “strategic goals.”
Public Safety Consultants will guide the search and selection process and assist in forming a committee to review applications. The process will involve community collaboration, inviting stakeholders, city officials, and law enforcement experts to aid in finding the ideal candidate.
