SOUTH HADLEY — The South Hadley boys basketball team made anything and everything from 3-point land in their 71-48 victory over Belchertown on Wednesday.

The Tigers drilled 15 3-pointers, with sophomore Noah Hambley leading the charge with six made shots from beyond the arc.

“That was our best,” South Hadley head coach Chris Gerber said on his team’s performance shooting 3s. “I think we hit 12 one other time, but that was good. We spread it around, we had a bunch of guys with two. I think Jackson Driver had four 3s in the first half… it was a heck of a performance by them.”

Isiah James and Tim Loughrey each concluded with a pair of 3s and eight points and Connor Hall nailed one 3-pointer for the victors.

Hambley had 25 points to pace the Tigers while Jack Loughrey finished with 13 points for the hosts, which improved to 6-2 on the season.

South Hadley flew out to a 21-6 lead after the first quarter and the Orioles couldn’t claw their way back to drop to 4-3.

“They shot well, they’re a good team, a well-coached team and so there’s going to be an obstacle there that we’ll have to overcome,” said Belchertown coach Jim Hart. “Playing on the road for the first time and different environment, so this is all stuff the guys are going to have to learn to work through. I thought our guys played afraid, we got out-toughed and the turnovers were [critical].”

Jacob Pacunas and Shea MacLean each collected 11 points for the Orioles, which entered Wednesdays bout winners of four in a row.

The Tigers took the first meeting between the two teams as well, 59-52, back on Dec. 12.

“We played them on opening night the first night, so that’s always kind of like nobody knows how they are, and kind of feeling each other out,” Gerber said.

South Hadley will host Northampton next while Belchertown will travel to Smith Academy. Both games are scheduled for Friday.

Northampton 65, West Springfield 57 – Brayden Nichols-Staples’ 3-pointer with 2 minutes, 30 seconds remaining put the Blue Devils up eight points, sinking the Terriers in a 65-57 independent contest on Wednesday in West Springfield.

Nichols-Staples’ 3 made it 56-48, and moments later, Jayden Rivera’s steal and bucket with less than two minutes to go made it a double-digit lead and sealed the deal.

West Side led 25-23 at halftime but Northampton pulled even 38-38 after three quarters.
