CHARLEMONT — The Hampshire Regional alpine ski team was ready to go for the season-opening meet at Berkshire East Mountain Resort on Thursday night as the boys took on the giant slalom course.
The Raiders had four skiers finish inside the top 15, led by Billy Warren’s second-place time of 31.85 seconds. Warren and Hampshire have only been able to practice twice a week so far this winter, but the team looked like it hadn’t skipped a beat.
“It felt great to be out here, and I’m excited to keep racing and see just how good our team can get this year,” Warren said.
Isaac Stith slotted in at seventh place, finishing in 33.26 to join Warren in the top 10. Jack Cameron (13th, 36.55) and Colton Duda (14th, 36.91) finished back-t0-back at 13 and 14, while Cobyn Barry took 20th with a time of 37.54. Chad Hockenberry finished 22nd (38.45) in a strong outing as well.
Warren was pleased with his first run of the season, but felt it could’ve been even better if it weren’t for one slip up in the pitch.
“I felt pretty good, but not as great as I could’ve done,” Warren said. “With it being the first race of the year, you have to shake the rust off. I went down pretty straight, but it kind of caught up to me in the pitch because I got a little late. But I’m fairly happy with it, and [I’m glad] we had a good night for the team.”
Northampton’s Keller Mahoney raced to a fifth-place finish, the second Hampshire County competitor to cross the line on Thursday. Mahoney’s time of 32.88 paced the Blue Devils while Jasper Tuck (12th, 36.47) and Henry Fallon (19th, 37.42) cracked the top 20.
PVCICS’ Scott brothers showed why they are some of the best in the area, as Teddy Scott finished 11th in 36.01 while James Scott was a second behind (37.02) to finish 16th.
