High Schools: Belchertown boys soccer hands Northampton its first loss of season

For the first time all season, a team finally put together a recipe to defeat the Northampton boys soccer team.

The Blue Devils entered Monday afternoon’s match with Belchertown having not lost a game in eight tries, but the Orioles had other plans on their home field.

A pair of Ian McDonald goals and another from Jacob Gladu was enough to scoot by Northampton, as the hosts won 3-2 in a competitive, physical matchup between two of Hampshire County’s best teams.

Joseph Yoon dished out two assists and Joey Borelli added one of his own for the Orioles. Jasper Cantor and Will Senn-McNally were the goal scorers for the Blue Devils while Sam Busone added an assist.

Belchertown’s Jack Mandeville stopped eight shots in goal; Northampton’s Salem Gregory recorded six.

Granby 4, Gateway 0 – The Rams took a 2-0 lead at the half and doubled it in the second half behind a brace from Riley Goodhind and goals from Brandon Carillon and Jake Gagnon.

Gavin Moreno dished out two assists and Brandon Chatel made two saves for Granby. Gateway goalie Zach Hess made seven saves. Granby is now 6-2-1 and Gateway is now 2-5-1.

Chicopee 6, Easthampton 1 – Sean Hopkins scored for the Eagles and goalie Sam Barr made nine saves.

Amherst 4, Palmer 1 – The ‘Canes went up 3-0 at halftime over the defending western Mass. Class D champs and coasted to a 4-1 win on the back of two goals from Madeline Hockman and one each from Moriah Luejten and Sama Mady. Beatrice Eggemeier provided a pair of assists and Hockman dished out one of her own.

South Hadley 5, Wahconah 0 – The Tigers forced 14 saves out of the Warriors on Monday to im prove to 6-2-1 on the season.

Allison Fleury scored twice and added an assist, Kate McArdle scored once an d added an assist and Hannah Haesaert and CC Gurek scored once each. Olivia Athas made six saves in net and Maddie Soderbaum made two.

McCann Tech 3, Smith Voc 2 – Monique Fredette scored both goals for Smith Voc and Erin Miller added an assist.

Northampton 9, Chicopee 0 – Willow Claps scored a hat trick, Margaux Galvin and Olivia Busone added two goals each and Allie Sullivan also scored in another big win for the Blue Devils.

Hampshire 2, Pittsfield 1 – Shayne Moynihan scored twice in the second half, both off Libby Puttick assists, to lead the Raiders to victory.

Girls volleyball

Belchertown 3, SICS 0 – Vivian Ross put up another 20-assist performance and the Orioles cruised to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-20 win. Layla Limiski led Belchertown with 10 kills and five aces and Gianna Picardi added nine kills.

Lenox 3, Easthampton 0 – The Eagles lost in straight sets Monday, 9-25, 18-25, 13-25. Camilla Corsello led Easthampton with three kills and four blocks, Summer Routheir tallied five assists and Addison Sigda made 10 digs.

Golf

Amherst 193, South Hadley 197 – Ben Scott notched a 42 to lead the ‘Canes to a tight win. Nate Ziomek (46), Phineus Pyecroft (50) and Alex Zakashansky (56) also scored for Amherst at Orchards Golf Club on Monday.

Jameson Webber led South Hadley with a 47, followed by Ryan MacGregor (49), Justin Moskal (50) and Luke Guiel (51). The Tigers were an hour removed from competing in the PVIAC Two-Ball tournament.

Hampshire 174, Chicopee 230 — Hampshire’s Colby Cabrini was the match medalist with a score of 41, while Riley Florek (43), Robert Herman (44) and Cole Boissonneault (46) also scored for the Raiders.

Hampshire was an hour removed from competing in the PVIAC Two-Ball tournament.

Belchertown 160, Chicopee Comp 183 – The Orioles improved to 8-2 and qualified for western Mass. with a win at the par-36 course of Cold Spring Country Club. They teed off just an hour after finishing the PVIAC Two-Ball tournament, which was also held at CSCC.

Michael Murray won medalist honors with a 34, followed by Jared Haynes (40), Daniel Hulmes (40) and Ryan Shea (46).

Field hockey

Greenfield 2, Belchertown 0 – The Green Wave knocked off the Orioles on Monday at Donna Woodcock Field to drop Belchertown to 7-2.

Frontier 2, Agawam 0 – The Redhawks forced 13 saves out of the Brownies, while Frontier goalie Kyra Richards only had to make one. Ashlie Galenski and Macy DeMaio scored Frontier’s goals and Stella Heflin added an assist.

Mohawk 3, Hampshire 1 – Chloe Moynihan scored Amherst’s lone goal and goalie Rylie Simmons made six saves. 

Late weekend results

Boys soccer

Northampton 4, Monson 1 — The Blue Devils raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 4-1 win on Friday night behind three points (two goals, one assist) from Will Senn-McNally.

Owen MacLaughlin and Jackson Oravec tallied the other goals while Jasper Cantor and Tate Norsen dished out assists in the victory. Watt Walko (two) and Salem Gregory (one) combined for three saves in goal for Northampton.

Girls volleyball

Frontier 3, Agawam 2 — The Redhawks watched their commanding two set to nothing lead slip away as the Brownies stormed back to tie things through four frames, but Frontier buckled down and dominated the fifth set to seal the deal.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 15-6.

Olivia Machon (13) and Greta Hale (10) combined for 23 kills for the Hawks, Parrish Stilla recorded 39 assists and Hannah Davis dug up 31 balls.

Belchertown 3, SICS 1 — Gianna Picardi put down 11 kills and Melina David added nine of her own as the Orioles overpowered the Bulldogs en route to a four-set win on Saturday.

Set scores were 25-14, 21-25, 26-24, 25-13.

Vivian Ross recorded 27 assists and six aces while Layla Liminski (seven kills, three assists, three blocks) put together a strong all-around performance for Belchertown.

Cross country

The Granby Rams’ cross country programs competed in the BayState meet over the weekend, with the girls placing ninth out of 13 teams led by Addy Hill’s 11th place overall finish. Hill set a new personal record time of 20:43, and was one of only two middle schoolers in the top 20 in the varsity race. Quinn Cook (22:43) was next across the line, also setting a new best, followed by Josie Curran (23:44), Adelynn Zimmer (24:35) and Rowan Cook (28:54) – all three of whom set PRs.

The boys didn’t have enough racers to score, but strong a day from Nathan Hutchinson earned him a medal with a time of 17:19. Trevor Sullivan set a PR with a time of 18:07 while Nate Benson and Colby Carleton finsihed in 20:27 and 20:40, respectively.
