The Belchertown girls tennis team backed up its top 10 ranking in Division 3 during its MIAA Round of 32 match against No. 24 Pentucket on Wednesday afternoon. The No. 9 Orioles felt right at home at Wilbraham Monson, as they swept Pentucket 5-0 in dominant fashion to open up their state tournament run.

At first singles, Ava Shea didn’t drop a single game in a crisp, efficient 6-0, 6-0 win against Katie Hella to continue her strong season leading Belchertown. Anna Stamp breezed through her match at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 to make short order of Pentucket’s Zoe Davis, and Gianna Picardi wasted no time picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Evelyn Dunn at third singles to give the Orioles a clean sweep in the singles matches.

Belchertown’s dominance continued into doubles, as Mia Corish and Emilee Chaisson got better and better as their match went on at first doubles – walking away with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph. At second doubles, Kasey Gibbons and Amanda Murray experienced nearly the same match as Corish and Chaisson. After going back-and-forth in the first set (a 6-4 win), they buckled down and sailed to a 6-0 win in set No. 2 as the Orioles soared over Pentucket across the board.

Belchertown will play the winner of Thursday’s Round of 32 match between No. 8 Watertown and No. 25 St. Mary on a date and time to be announced. An upset win would put the Orioles right back at home for the Round of 16.

Div. 4 Round of 32

No. 4 Hopedale 5, No. 29 South Hadley 0 — The Tigers’ season came to a close in the Division 4 Round of 32 on Wednesday, as they fell to state powerhouse Hopedale, 5-0.

South Hadley finished the season as Western Mass. Class B semifinalists and with an overall record of 8-11.

Div. 2 Round of 32

No. 9 Northampton 4, No. 24 Oliver Ames 1 — It was just another day in the office for Galen Fowles and Durrell Patrick, who both have still yet to lose a match at second and third singles this season. At No. 2, Fowles won 6-3, 6-3, and at No. 3, Patrick battled for a 6-2, 6-3 win.

Reilly Fowles made it a clean sweep at first singles, enjoying a 6-1, 6-0 victory as the first off the court on Wednesday. Kaz Sugihara and Eli Wool won 7-6 (7-3 tiebreak), 6-3 at first doubles to round out Northampton’s winners.

No. 10 Hingham 5, No. 23 Amherst 0 — The ‘Canes didn’t have as much success at their crosstown rival on Wednesday, as they watched their season come to a close with a 5-0 defeat to Hingham – a top 10 team in Division 2.

Amherst finished the season with a 4-10 record and ended the regular season on a two-match winning streak prior to the start of the Western Mass. tournament.

Div. 3 Round of 32

No. 16 Old Rochester 5, No. 17 Belchertown 0 — After a difficult loss at the hands of Old Rochester, the Orioles’ spectacular season is officially over. Belchertown was the Western Mass. Class B runner-up to East Longmeadow, and it finished the regular season having won seven straight matches.

With Wednesday marking the end of the 2024 campaign, head coach Zach Siano has likely coached his last tennis match at Belchertown, and senior captain Trevor Weiss is closing the book on a spectacular high school tennis career.

Boys volleyball

Div. 2 prelim

No. 25 Holyoke 3, No. 40 SICS 0 — A preliminary round sweep was in store for the Purple Knights on Wednesday, as they rolled to their third 3-0 sweep of Springfield International Charter School this season.

Holyoke will take on another team from Springfield in the Round of 32, as they head to No. 8 West Springfield on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Smith Vocational 3, Westfield Tech 2 — The Vikings picked up their 14th win of the spring in dramatic fashion in their regular season finale, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off against Westfield Tech in a non-playoff game on Tuesday.

James Lavallee went the distance on the mound, striking out 11 while surrendering only two hits and two runs – neither of which were earned. At the plate, Lavallee (two RBIs), Patrick Millin and Kaleb Jorritsma (RBI) each tallied a hit for Smith Voc. Lavallee also walked three times.

Fifth/sixth grade baseball

Amherst Red Sox 11, Amherst Royals 6 — Red Sox pitcher Bobby Wells earned the win on the mound while Jonah Sommers locked down the save by striking out five of the final six batters he faced on Tuesday.

Linden Cocco-Romano had three hits and three runs scored and Johnny Siano turned in two web gems at shortstop, including a double play in the first inning.

For the Royals, Phineas Friz and Emmett Owens had two hits each. Emmett scored two runs.
