Recently at the Amherst Farmers Market, we approached people with a sign that said, “Stop the Library Demolition.” We pointed out that their statement is simply not true; the library is not being demolished but renovated and expanded. The person we spoke to said their sign was intended as a prompt for people to ask questions so they could explain what’s happening.

This answer was as disturbing as the sign, if not more so, given their explanations are inaccurate and inflammatory. Spreading disinformation and misleading the public weakens our community and our democracy.
