Out-of-town garden report: I went to Maryland to visit family. The roses, begonias, geraniums, daisies, coneflowers and impatiens are still thriving there. Mums are everywhere.

If a new marketing device travels north, look for large screens in supermarket parking lots showing how to do crafts and create eating areas, along with food demonstrations. There were several in the Giant parking lot. Giant is the Stop & Shop brand in Maryland.

The change in leaf color is evident as you drive north.

While Halloween is at the end of the month and today is Oct. 1, I saw several homes with Halloween decorations on front lawns.

Meanwhile, I am still picking tomatoes.

Liz Larson, director of the Amherst Historical Society and Museum, sent an email about Art on the Lawn, an arts and craft show, that will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Artists will be set up on the lawn of the museum selling their creations.

The event honors the legacy of the Historical Society’s founder, Mabel Loomis Todd, who was herself an artist, specializing in painting, especially scenes of nature.

Barbara Schuman of Amherst sent me a postcard of the four Bars in York, England. They are not drinking establishments. Bar means gateway, and they are the four entrances in the medieval wall that surrounds the city. She wrote that she went to York Minster cathedral and heard a wonderful choir at vespers.
