Cubmaster Walter Dembek was taken by surprise at a meeting of Cub Scout Pack 119 last week at which Carol Paciorek narrated a tribute to the scouting leader entitled, “This is Your Life.” Dembek was given a photo album and plaque commemorating his service to Pack 119.

Coretta Scott King, widow of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, told Smith College women yesterday that they should become part of the “creative, dedicated minority” that is seeking to alleviate poverty, war, racism and other injustices in the world. Speaking at Helen Hills Hills Chapel, Mrs. King told the students that as “privileged women” they had a special obligation to help their fellow human beings.

A liberal and enterprising spirit on the subject of the Hampshire and Hampden canal prevails in this and other towns through which the canal is expected to pass. Measures have been taken to procure a skillful engineer, and an accurate survey will soon be made.

DEERFIELD — Staff at the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association (PVMA) were checking their inboxes on April 2 and found a strange email in the spam folder.

Former director of development and alumnae relations at Smith College, Herbert Heston, has agreed to volunteer his services to help the St. Michael’s Alumni Association and the Mr. and Mrs. Club, an organization of parents, mount a capital funds campaign to provide continuing support to families of children enrolled at St. Michael’s schools.

The Shelburne Falls Area Women’s Club is celebrating its 100th birthday this spring, and will kick off its centennial speaker series with a talk on the history of women’s clothing with Northampton author Kiki Smith on April 9 at the Shelburne-Buckland Community Center.

BELCHERTOWN — For 15 minutes Wednesday morning, Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler turned the Belchertown High School Auditorium into his history classroom, teaching the Belchertown student body about a series of individuals who shattered the glass ceilings for Black people in their respective industries.

The first two days of the Northampton Winter Festival were blessed with excellent to adequate weather and large crowds. The eight-day festival continues today with a day-long George Washington’s Birthday sale in the Downtown Business area and a sports luncheon at the Hotel Northampton featuring the area’s two college men’s basketball teams, the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College.

DEERFIELD — The Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association has begun a multiyear effort to bring to life a project exploring the experiences of Lucy Terry Prince, the earliest identified African American writer. The work began last Saturday on the first day of Black History Month.

In a massive shakeup at the University of Massachusetts School of Education, Dean Dwight Allen has resigned, and Associate Dean Atron Gentry has been fired, the Gazette learned today. The resignation and dismissal come in the wake of several weeks of reports that funds at the School of Education may have been spent on purposes other than those for which they were intended.

One of the most prosperous individuals in early Southampton was Ichabod Strong, who dammed the Manhan River and established a sawmill there in the early 1730s; that mill complex, once known as the Strong’s Mills complex, now part of the Lockville Historic District. Strong, who was described in a genealogy book as “a man of stirring business qualities of character” and “best of all, a remarkably godly man,” also built four farmhouses in the area, which his sons and grandsons inherited. One of those farmhouses, part of the National Register of Historic Places, is on the market right now.
